In June 2007 the Positiver Dialog jointly with the Aids Hilfe Wien, the Names Project and Aids counseling with Pater Clemens Kriz inaugurated the first Austrian Aids Memorial. It is located next to the chapel of pilgrimage Maria Grün in 1020 Vienna, Aspernallee near to Lusthaus.
Since then visitors numbers have increased steadily, much to our delight. Right from the beginning, we, the Positiver Dialog have taken on the task to take care of the Memorial. This means to plant flowers in the spring, in autumn the flower ribbon get´s replaced with a covering of red bark mulch. Thus the Memorial remains visitable all year round. Around the red Ribbon we have placed stones with names for those who have passed away. Unfortunately we have to add new names every year.
The Memorial has become an important place not just for those affected. Many people stop by to remember the people who have lost their lives since the infection first became known. The Memorial has become a place of refuge, retreat, to pray and to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Again and again interesting conversations take place and we can do a bit of educational work whilst doing our care work onsite. Sometimes we can give the illness a face and we want to be able to continue to do so in future and our currently 70 members are ready too. Just to get the funding ( flowers, bark, mulch, candles ) is becoming increasingly difficult.
By the way, also this year the Memorial Day will be held in Maria Grün. We will remember all the people who died the last year from this still deadly infection.
